I usually play with a Yamaha 11b4 mouthpiece, the other day by mistake, I played with a GR 64s that I had forgotten. I was doing articulated two-octave scales. I found that I was having a hard time reaching two octaves on the Ab or A scales, but not on D or even on Eb. I'm not good at evaluating mouthpieces, but I think the GR was impeding the movement of the lips. I don't feel that difficulty on the Yamaha.

Not sure if there was a question in your comment.

The BE philosophy in general is:

Players with a more focused setup can usually play smaller mouthpieces easier. Rather than "impede" lip movement, smaller mouthpieces (in general) instead give support to the focused setup.

But if your setup is not focused, small mouthpieces can indeed feel like an impediment. Sometimes this is feeling is useful if you want to take advantage of the small mouthpiece effect (page 49).

Also not sure how you mistook a GR mouthpiece for a Yamaha mouthpiece. The GR's I've seen look very different (modern) than a Yamaha (which looks like a Bach).

Thanks Jeff. My inattention can be legendary. The two mouthpieces were in the same pocket and I just didn't look. I will retest the GR in the future to check the focus. The exercises are improving my trumpet playing. Another time, thank you !!

Though I've not played the GR 64s I routinely play the Yamaha 11b4 on picc. I have no problem with the Yamaha but to date anything shallower or with a higher alpha angle I definitely feel like the mouthpiece is limiting my buzz. Some say bottoming out though I no longer feel that's an accurate description of what's going on.
