Hello everyone. Since retiring from playing in 2019, I have been researching The Goldman Band, specifically the cornet soloists and later, the trumpet soloists. As such, I have created a couple of YouTube channels and a few Wikipedia pages which you might be interested in, so I thought I would post them here. The Wikipedia pages I have created are for James Burke, Leonard Smith, and Vincent Buono (it turns out Buono, and not Ernest Williams was Goldman's first cornet soloist).
There was an already existing Wiki page for the Goldman Band. I have added the templates for the cornet and trumpet soloists as well as the cornet trios. My major resource was the New York Times archives. I thought players might be interested in a cornet soloist's workload with the Goldman Band "back in the day". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldman_Band
There were already existing Wiki pages for many other cornetists and I linked those to the Goldman Band templates. The Del Staigers page was already in existence. I added the majority of the information you will see on it. This is an ongoing project and I hope to add more information as time goes by. Anyone with a Wikipedia account can contribute to these pages and are encouraged to do so.
The YouTube channels I created are for James Burke and Del Staigers. I produced all of the videos myself. There are currently 35 videos/recordings of Burke performing, most of them live on radio or in concert. Some amazing playing! There are more to come! The Del Staigers channel has every recording he ever made including his trumpet lessons. Both the Burke and Staigers channels have links to to their Wikipedia pages. I hope you enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8greAZu6Nvf5BblD1OpzMQ

Here is another trumpeter who played principal trumpet with several orchestras. This fellow is going to be interesting to research. Was his birth name Samuel Miller? When did he emigrate to America? With whom did he play after 1934? When did he die? Where is his grave?

I heard Jimmy Burke and Kirby Jolly play solos with The Goldman Band at Prospect Park in Brooklyn during the early 70s.
If memory serves me right, Kirby played La Virgen de la Macarena.
I had the thrill of a lifetime sharing a stand with Jimmy Burke when we were hired for the same community band gig, where they were short some trumpet players for a performance, during the mid 70s. |

Jerry,
That's a great memory for sure. I sent Kirby an email the other day. Hope he gets it and we get to chat. He wrote a dissertation on the Goldman Band and it's at UI. Hope to get to see it one of these days. |

Thanks for this research and for sharing it! So instructive to see what repertoire was played and how often. Wonderful! |
