I'm practising RO#1

When I use a keyboard to reference the pedal, I feel I'm playing 2 octaves below the lower test pitch on the CD, (which I believe is the correct note) but when I try to match Archie on the CD, it sounds to me like his pitch is higher than the one I'm playing. Are my ears being fooled into mistaking a more focused sound for a higher pitch?

Thanks for any help or guidance.
Andy

Hi Andy,

As you suggested, it could be that your ears are fooling you. Have you recorded yourself and compared it to the CD?

We're on the wrong side of the bell to hear our own sound as it is. With RO, the internal sounds are pretty strong too. What I typically do when I practice RO, is to get the bell close to a wall or door, as the reflection of the sound makes it easier to monitor the sound quality.

If you're still unsure, feel free to e-mail me a video clip, I'd be happy to give you some feedback.

Thanks Ko, just to clarify, I think it's the pitch on the CD that's confusing me. It somehow seems a higher pitch when it's more focused. I haven't got as far as getting my own sound more focused as yet. I'll keep on it.

I will get into both recording and reflecting - they sound like worthwhile strategies in any case - and I'll take you up on your offer of video feedback when I can get a reasonable quality recording together (I'm one of the few people I know without a smartphone).

Thanks again
Andy

Hi Andy,

I don't have a smartphone either, so, dare I say, you are in good company!

Hi. I found BE in late 2001. I was pleased to see and hear immediate difference in my playing. I was able to have a lesson with Jeff at ITG in Fort Worth, TX in 2003. Regarding RI 1 and the double pedals, he said I was being too "nice". I believe the book says it should sound like a lawnmower. I believe the cd sound (Archie) is more focused. Really seek to activate as much tissue of the lips as possible. It will begin to show in normal playing. HTH. Billy
