Jack Lord portraying a jazz trumpeter named Gabe Johnson.

Not the most inspired playing ever but anyone know who it is?

Very "West Coast." Looks sort of like Chet Baker.

I think that's the kind of vibe they were trying to suggest. Jack might have been a great choice to portray Chet, but at the time this was filmed Chet was in the middle of creating his legend.

Jack's doing a much more convincing job of fake-playing than Ethan Hawke did in his Chet movie.

Chet was the model for this portrayal but clearly this was not Chet playing.

could be a lot of people. Stu Williamson's not a bad guess, but I don't know how much studio work he did, and I'd guess that this is someone who was a studio regular. (Stu may have been a studio guy, I just don't know). After listening to this a few times two names kept popping into my head Jack Shaldon and Conti Condoli. Don't know if it's either of them, but it certainly could be.....

Lord did indeed give a convincing performance of playing the trumpet. Get a look at his lips when he removes the trumpet at the end of the piece. There is a ring around his chops. And you could see his neck bulging when it appeared he was blowing into the horn.

I've just had a quick look at current online sources about his career and only found vague references to studio work but I think I've read something a bit more definitive somewhere. But yeah, I guess there was no shortage of people around LA back then who could have been hired for this and made it sound like that!

Anyway, thanks Robert for posting the video. I wonder if Jack Lord played trumpet at least a bit to be able to portray it that well?
