Lee's first horn was bought for him by his sister Ernestine, and either Lee or Ernestine told writer Barbara Gardner that it was a Committee, which always struck me as a little unlikely.
So what is it? He's about 14 in this picture, and about a year in to trumpet playing.

The horn in the photo is not an Olds Ambassador. Ambassador water keys had the lever on the bottom of the slides and an Ambassador did not have a brace on the tuning slide. Looks like there may be a fixed ring on the third slide, which would eliminate all Olds horns of this era. Perhaps this is a Conn. _________________ Clay Collins

That photo is really blurry for making a precise identification.
The horn does not appear to have a third valve slide throw ring - though the mount could have been knocked off. There is something reflecting light at a couple of points along the gap in the third valve slide that could be braces, slide to slide or tuning slide to slide (if it is a fixed configuration). It could be a reflection off a stop rod for Esbach slides on an early 20th century English Besson. . . .
It is not an Ambassador as noted above. It is not a classic French or English-made French design Besson, as the tuning slide crook is the wrong shape and the brace is too far back. It is not a Conn 8D as the 8D bracing is not apparent, the stop rod is missing, and the proportion of length to height in the wrap is off. Lastly, it is not a Committee for reasons already noted and more. That covers every horn listed.
What is interesting is that I think I am seeing a French (Courtois/Selmer/Couesnon) pinkie hook. Anyone else see that? I am leaning toward a cheap Couesnon stencil trumpet, but can't find a match. _________________ Ron Berndt
