Hey,

I am a student who is currently in my country's equivalent of high school, and is looking for a first rotary trumpet. I'm not quite sure of how expensive or proffesional of a trumpet i am looking for, but something in, let's say, an Aggreable price range is sought for.

Does anyone have any ideas or tips on where to look and what to look for? Any specific trumpet makers?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Alex

People will need to know where you are to be able to recommend from what is available.

General answer

1. rotaries will typically be more expensive than pistons
2. cheap rotaries will cause more issues than cheap piston horns because it is more difficult to fix issues at home

But as Ron B already said: to help you we need specifics about your location.

I have used Thomann for many years and they are great. However, to start I would probably go used until I know what I am looking for and then buy THE horn a few years down the road (in my case „a few years“ translates into 20 ... but that is not necessary ). At least for this strategy, knowing the location of the OP is useful.

Brassnose,
It seems to me that “to buy used” you must know...more than to buy a new good student or intermediate horn. That’s why, for instance, in my opinion nothing can beat for a beginner a new Yamaha 2335 ( I recently played one and was very pleased, even if my usual horn is a Xeno 8335RGS).
I don’t have any experience with the rotary Yam but I was told it was a good (and secure) horn for the price (and the Thomann customers’opinion are ok)
Regards

@ Voltrane, yes, that is true. However, when I started playing C trumpet I just bought a Getzen Eterna C off EBay and was quite happy with it. Sold it roughly at what I paid for it, so no big financial loss.

As a rule I could sell all my used instruments for about what I paid and that makes it easy to flip horns until you found one you like, hence the suggestion.

@ alexblendulf: there is a trumpet shop in Stockholm, https://brass-spec.se/?g=t and there is also Lars Gerdt (can’t find a website). Of course the suggestion of using Thomann is viable, they have excellent customer service and I also like FMB https://www.fmb-direkt.de/, very solid and quick customer service.

Oh yeah, I like B&S too, I have never found one that was bad. Didn’t like all of them the same but that was me, not the horns. Also look for K&H, high quality for a good price.
