When this was made, very few could play it.
Vacchiano could.

I believe he used an F trumpet for this.

Not the pic I was looking for, but this looks like he's playing a Bach F trumpet here.

I'd heard that Manny Laureano now owns Vacchiano's F trumpet, so I used "Manny Laureno", "Vacchiano" and "Trumpet" as search terms and did some sleuthing.

http://ojtrumpet.net/playerhorn/

According to this page, listed under Manny's equipment, is a Besson F Trumpet that was owned by Vacchiano.

Maybe it's the same horn? Hopefully Manny can chime in.

In fact, on a recent broadcast of the Shostakovich Piano Concert No. 1, Manny brought out the Vacchiano "F" trumpet for a passage in the finale: https://mnorch.vhx.tv/videos/outliers-and-intrigue

Vacchiano had a great high register! Interesting that another guy (who?) was playing trumpet on the recording as well. Sometimes they played in unison, other times Vacchiano played alone, and sometimes the other guy played alone. Vacchiano was one of the few players that could play the Brandenburg back then.

Vacchiano used to say the English Besson F trumpet was the best trumpet ever made.

It sure is sweet. I'll be using it for Pulcinella next week. I also own a French Besson Eb that I bought from him and a G that seems to be a bit of a frankenhorn.

When I was taking lessons with Al Ligotti(NY Philharmonic, Vacchiano student) he had some French Bessons that played amazing. The pictures on the wall were just a history lesson in the greats. I sure have great memories of walking into that studio smelling of pipe tobacco..and then him ripping me apart with the transpositions lol. When you did good in lessons you felt like a king...when bad you might have been sent out of the door within the first 10 minutes.
He also had a Besson D trumpet that was made in the same configuration as a Bb...and had a story about that. Trying to locate it in my memory lol.

It's so great to hear him play the Brandenburg on the Besson F trumpet. Imagine the unknown...attempting what nowadays is always played on a piccolo on the best equipment of the time, which was the F trumpet. Imagine the revere attainded by all of his trumpet colleagues of the day.

Don't post much here but just had to pipe in. When I listened to the Vacchiano recording it reminded me of Ligotti and that Besson tone. They were the best made instruments of the time!
