A friend is shopping for a sound system for outdoor events at a park district venue. He’s considering a 1,000 Watt Samson Expedition with four speakers.

What do you think of that choice? Is it powerful enough to deliver good sound oudoors to an audience of several hundred?

Any suggestions for a different system and a source for it?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I had been using a Yamaha StagePas (400 or 500 watts), which seems similar to the Samson Expedition (except that you have 1000 watts). The StagePas worked for larger outdoor gigs with a drummer and vocalist, but I had to push it. I sold it a couple years ago, for something with more flexibility and more power. I got a Yamaha MG10XUF board with 2 Alto TS310 active speakers with 4000 watts of peak power (2000 peak watts each). I think it cost me less than $700 about 2 years ago. (I went to my local GuitarCenter when they had a 15% off sale.)

The Samson Expedition (like the Yamaha StagePas) will be simpler to operate and lug around. You can use the 2 passive speakers it comes with (1000 watts), or add 2 additional active speakers when you need more power.

Will you have enough channels? It technically has 10 channels, but only if you split the upper channels. Otherwise it practically has 6 channels, or 7 if you use an RCA-to-1/4 adapter.

Thanks, Mike. The guy who’s looking for advice is in charge of the venue, not a musician. He wants a house system for an audience area of nearly 3 acres. 1KW seems pretty small for that job.
