When you're doing the Clarke #1 studies, I notice that you are not following the dynamic marking of "pp" in the original book, but rather using a full, big sound. Is this something you vary from time to time, like the other elements you mention, or do you play at a louder volume because you are focusing on your sound?

Do you ever play them soft? When I play them at a comfortable volume, they feel easy and satisfying to me. When I play them at pianissimo, they are much more challenging and difficult, especially in the upper register. Was Clarke looking to develop something other than Adam was when he wrote them this way?


When working with Mr. Adam or one of his more knowledgeable students, everything is played at different volumes, tempos, different styles of articulation, with different timbre, etc according to what each student needs at each stage in the developmental process. This is often not explained, but instead modeled through call and response. After years of studying in this fashion, a player from this tradition learns to self prescribe based on how things sound and how they feel. This is a constant process of evolution. One size fits none.

But I will say that the rich, resonant sound is NEVER to be sacrificed at any volume.

Having played along with the recording for three days now, I can say that it is something that really works for me, and I'm looking forward to further installments.

Even though the recording is more than and hour and a half long, the actual playing time is more like half that. You can skip over the lengthy explanations and discussion after the first time.

One small, specific way it helped me was when I switched over to play my flugelhorn afterward. I've been having trouble going over the break into the upper register. After playing the routine, it was like there was never a barrier there at all.

My trumpet chops feel strong and secure afterwards--a very nice feeling.

I don't know. I'm a facebook user, but don't understand the ins and outs of it.

Two questions:

1) When is the next video coming?

2) Before this video, I had seen videos of John Raymond playing only flugelhorn with his trio. I see from this video and from others on Youtube that he is by no means only a flugelhorn player, but it does seem to be an instrument that he performs on a lot.

Does he do anything different or special with the Adam routines to ensure that benefits transfer from the trumpet to the flugelhorn, or does he actually do some of the routine on flugelhorn?

For instance, on a day when he may have multiple performances with his trio and only plan to play flugelhorn--would he warm up on trumpet?

I've always wondered about the role that trumpet playing has in the practice and maintenance of players who specialize in, or play a lot of flugelhorn, like Guido Basso and Art Farmer.

1) I didn't catch the name of the book you referenced in the last part of the lesson-the one written by an orchestral player.

2) Where can I go to get that drone app for my phone?

One of the Bill Adam students that escapes attention is hornist Eric Terwiliger, former solo horn with Munich Philharmonic and Bavarian Radio Symphony. He really credits his success with Bill Adam and he started out as a trumpet player!
