I've seen a trumpet player somewhere on youtube (an accomplished player like Arturo Sandoval) play some kind of black kazoo/trumpet (has three keys), clarinet-looking body thing fluently and whoever it was had to play some notes using a key/lever where our 3rd slide spit valve is . It was short like a cornet but straight like a clarinet. About 15 inches long and about 2-1/2 inches wide it looked like in the video.
Any ideas of what it is? If I can find the video again I'll post it.

It sort of looks like the top piece in the photo (the "bell" section of the clarinet shown) but with keys and played straight out and there's a small piece at the end you blow into.
The thing that really made me post this is someone told me a trumpet player with Saturday night a while back played some weird-looking thing. John-something I think. You SNL peeps might know more about it.

James Morrison on an MDT?
John Swana on a Steiner EVI? Or perhaps the version made in collaboration with Akai?
Either/or, or neither on a Berglund NuEVI?
John Swana uses an Electronic Valve Instrument almost exclusively nowadays. He may have upgraded to the Berglund.

That was my first thought, but the OP wrote the instrument he observed had only three keys and some sort of lever system at the end.
(Speaking of cornetti and keys, is there any cornetto maker who has experimented with a cornetto design featuring a key system? Even recorder makers are outfitting tenor recorders with key systems.  )
I forgot to add that here and there one can find a soprano ophicleide, either restored or custom-made. It would certainly count as a keyed brass instrument with a (mostly) straight body. I doubt it was the instrument the OP was talking about.

Victor Mahillon made a cornetto with keys in the 19thcentury. It was straight and had a modern cornet mouthpiece more or less. It didn’t work.
It is in the Brussels instrument museum.
Some 18th century cornetti were made with one key for a better c#.
I don't know of any modern maker making cornetto with extra keys. |

Thank you! This really helped narrow it down.
I think the following link is the best rendition that is closest in sound, function, and look. It seems almost the same except the one I saw was round and the body looked exactly like a cut-down clarinet but with these playing features. Thanks guys!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8il3WtIQCyw

It is a clarinet. I was illustrating using a photo of a clarinet (it's shape because I can't draw a picture in a post) but stating it was similar but only about half the size of the clarinet (like the top half with a mouthpiece).
