Last evening, after a year and some weeks, our Concert Band committee decided to have a rehearsal. Our community has about 350,000 folks in its area, and our rate of new cases is down to about 10 per day, and the vaccination rate is closing in on 40%. Since our band has quite a few senior citizens, I thought it might be a little sparse. I was WRONG, we had full instrumentation, and about 70 people, 30 or so were new. Every one had either full vaccination, or had recovered. Rehearsal was quite good, although tired chops were in evidence after an hour and 45 minutes playing time.

Will let you know if we get an outbreak, but enthusiasm is high!

Glad to hear it. Our church orchestra has been back in session since February but only playing on Sundays every other week. I was very surprised at the size of the congregation on Palm Sunday because it is a church with a significant older population.

I believe people are hungry for musical and other gatherings and while being careful (nobody is hugging yet!) they are eager to get out and back to some semblance of the Old Normal.

I’m also in Texas (Houston), our 12 piece band is back to a normal gig schedule, even somewhat busier than pre Covid, we’re currently doing 5-7 gigs monthly.

(BTW: I’m not sure is if this is relevant, but I’m 66, had covid in January, no intention of getting the vaccine).

Oh dear - playing again! Fantastic! What a relief. However here in Sweden the light at the end of the tunnel seems to belong to the train coming.
No gigs no nothing, in spite of me being a member of three bands. Hopefully things will get better after the summer. Vaccination under way - I´ll get my second shot May 11.
So enjoy! Lucky one!

I've been rehearsing with a group of folks for over a month now...it's made up of members from a few different area concert bands/brass bands who were ready to get back to playing again. Everyone has had at least their first vaccination. Many of these folks are 50+, and we've had no issues. The Big Band I play in will start rehearsing again in May...everyone is chomping at the bit to play. Again, many of these folks are 50+, and all have had at least their first vaccination.

I fear for humanity also! When I start playing again it may not be too pretty! Though I play at home every day it's just not the same and I am worried about what I will sound like in a setting where someone will hear. Fingers crossed.

UPDATE:

Well, we are about to have our 4th rehearsal. No outbreaks of disease to report. We have had a lot of dropouts, but it all seems to be attributable to folks not being able to attend the two performances we have scheduled, or the inevitable group of folks who haven't played for a while and don't want to play third parts, or just can't play the challenging parts without work.

Anyway, the concert band has been a refreshing reunion with old friends, and a few newbies. And our Brass Band has started back up as well. We have a couple of rehearsals, and a very rigorous concert schedule starting the first Sunday in June, with 7 concerts, all different over the first half of summer.

Now if I can just get the iron back in my Eb chops!

You just haven't lived until you play a concert on the Texas Plains when your car's thermometer says it is 112 degrees, and your Eb cornet is pulled out all the way, and you are still 25 cents sharp! In fact, we have the whole group tuned at 25 cents sharp when the air temp is over 100. Which happens a lot in our area!

I am thinking that heat could also be detrimental to the lips and chops in general. Almost like "bobbing for french fries." But if you got to play, that's progress.
