Let's not forget Mike Metheny! And Ack van Rooyen (he has a Van Laar Oiram flugelhorn model designed specifically for him with his design input -- the "Ack" model).
Are you talking about people who play flugelhorn exclusively, or people who also play trumpet or cornet, but are excellent flugelhorn players too? |

IMHO Ack Van Rooyen is pure drawn butter when he plays. Andrew Crowley from Britain has done some stuff on flugel that is awesome. You can't go wrong with any of the players mentioned. Ack Van Rooyen is the Doc Severinsen of europe as he, too, is in his nineties! _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,

I have noticed that when these conversations begin, they usually end up focusing on trumpet/cornet players who are excellent flugelhorn doublers.
It would be cool to see a thread about flugelhorn specialists. I guess they are too rare, perhaps even technically non-existent in jazz. (Not sure about genres like BBB or Low Country fanfare orkestra.) How many jazz or pop flugelhorn specialists started on flugelhorn and never touched a trumpet or cornet, even as an occasional double? My guess is not many.
For example, I've seen Hugh Masekela play the trumpet on more than one occasion. Chuck Mangione definitely started on trumpet. Art Farmer played cornet before switching to flugelhorn, and then later in his career played the "flumpet". Mike Metheny played the trumpet first before switching to flugelhorn (mostly) full-time.
People always mention Clark Terry as a great flugelhorn player. Yes, he was. But flugelhorn was a doubling instrument for him. The same goes for Roy Hargove.
One thing I notice about flugelhorn specialists is that they are more willing to push the instrument in different ways, while flugelhorn doublers will focus on playing the flugelhorn in a way in which it makes the greatest contrast with the trumpet. Maybe that explains why some folks don't like full-time flugelhorn players as much.
There is a stereotype for the flugelhorn sound. It has to be dark/fluffy/mellow, or it's "wrong". Some flugel specialists will foray into where the instrument will start sounding snarly/rough/brassy or squeally, and I guess that's not everybody's cup of tea, so to speak. For example, Hugh Masekela often evoked a very forceful and brassy sound that he used to great effect, at least in my opinion. _________________ Enjoy the journey. |

I don't agree with Didymus. Some players are destined for the flügel though they may play (occasionally) trumpet, their style is simply more connected with the flügel:
Ack van Rooyen is a true example,
Art Farmer, though he did later choose the flumpet (which is some weird flugelish horn)
Clark Terry is much more a flügelplayer than a trumpetplayer IMO
Chuck Mangione
Alex Sipiagin may be a doubler but is superb on the flügel
Jimmy Owens is great on his Alexander four valve rotary flügel
ALL flügelplayers are also trumpetplayers (Ack van Rooyen does not own a trumpet anymore) so I see them as flügelplayers who double so now and then on trumpet (or cornet). |

Didymus adds some good thoughts. And, that is the thing with flugel. The vast majority start and play predominantly trumpet. What I know of Ack Van Rooyen is all flugel but it doesn't qualify him more as a "flugel great". If I might be so bold I think that Chet Baker had a trumpet sound on his flugel and vice versa. I truly loved Maynard Ferguson and heard him twice in concert. He had a driving sound on flugel, the same as on trumpet. It doesn't change how i feel about his music. The older I get the more I love the people that can get that soft, fluffy sound from the flugelhorn. That MHO. Thanks, Folks. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,

difficult to choose one, but Stéphane Belmondo (FRA) is a great player and dedicated almost exlcusevy to the flugelhorn. _________________ Fabio |

When I commented a couple days ago I couldn't remember his name but just looked it up. Francesco Santucci's flugelhorn solos in the movie "Bugsy" are, I think a wonderful example of a warm sound. I imagine he is a studio player among other things but that sound is wonderful to behold. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,
