On the false fingering excessive, I don't understand what is meant by the instructions at the top of the page:
Do the (1) Slurred as shown (2) Staccato

The complete sentence in those instructions at the top of page 19 says:

Quote:
Do these (1) Slurred as shown (2) Staccato (see form on page 20).

When you look at the bottom left-hand side of page 20 you'll see the model of how to do them staccato.

To the right of that is this paragraph:

Quote:
The purpose of this routine is to acquaint you thoroughly with the false fingerings on your instrument. False fingering is valuable in certain rapid passages, and assists in ironing out a smooth, flowing melody. Of course, the intonation must be checked at all times. When playing fortissimo, it is a good policy not to use false fingerings as the tone quality suffers considerably.

Thanks for asking, Donovan!

So, it's not that you play them as if they have a repeat sign, but rather, do the exercise again, with the staccato rhythm shown on the bottom of the page. Right?

Just a guess, but I suspect he would have been okay with you doing it either of the two ways you mentioned.

Many Reinhardt drills had you tongue first and slur on the repeat, so that might be a better choice, but I’m thinking that maybe in this drill he mostly wanted you to get familiar with the fingering choices and the way the notes sounded (and felt) tongued and slurred.

I could easily be wrong, since I don’t claim to be an authority on anything.
