I´ve decided to buy myself a piccolo trumpet, and the
choice is between a Bach AP190 and a Yamaha ytr6810.

The Yamaha is much cheaper, but so many have said
so many good things about it that it seems like a good option.

My questions therefore are: which one is

- the most freeblowing
- the best in tune
- reminding the most of the old Selmer P. piccolo regarding sound, i.e. the brightest/darkest

I really need help to make a decision! Any other comment and
experience will be utterly welcome!

Yamaha, hands down. They are well-made and play in tune.

The Bach will likely be more free blowing, being a long picc model.

The Yamaha, being a short model picc may be more Selmer like.

The Bach may have slightly better intonation....but, depends on the horn.

If money is a factor, get the Yamaha. Great Great little horn! Not a thing wrong with it.

The Bach piccs have their fans but I don't see that they get nearly as many recommendations as other picc brands.

I've liked pretty much all the Yamaha pics I've played though I like the short bell least. The 9820C (3 valve + rotor) is easily my favorite. I found it a very easy transition from the Bb compared to all other piccs I've played.

Older Yamaha picc's are usually tiny bores. Around .401" bore. Like a soda straw. Not my cup of tea.
Bach's are not much better.

Playing a Schilke P7-4 is amazing, all you would ever need.

They play fairly differently, I'd try them both.

Yamaha is good and consistent, but the choice between a yamaha and a bach is a Schilke, actually.

I own the Yamaha and have tried the Bach.

I bought the Yamaha because I got a great deal on a second hand one, and it plays fantastically.

I use alternate fingerings for D,Eb and E, but this depends on the context in which I am playing and if I'm on the Bb or A leadpipe. The intonation on the rest of the instrument is rather good, once you've got used to piccolo. What I'm really saying is this isn't a horrifically out of tune instrument that will lead to bad habits.

Blow wise I find mine pretty free blowing (although I do use a Warbuton 12* backbore which is quite large). As others have said, the Bach is a bit freer like most long models are. Soundwise, I love the Yamaha (I do own one ), it can be bright and sparkly without sounding nasal (despite the tiny bell), and can also hold its own at the top of a brass choir. I've only tried the Bach and other long models in smaller rooms, but my perception was that they were louder.

The 6810 Yammie can do everything a piccolo needs to do about 95% as well as the longer models (my opinion, but seems to be shared among players of this instrument). If that 5% means a lot to you, then there are plenty of other instruments that will satisfy that need! Please do try them both to see for yourself.

I just picked up a Schilke P7-4. It is by far the best Piccolo Trumpet I have ever played! I would definitely give one a try before buying something else.

So do you want the best pic, or just the best from those two choices?

The "best" (YMMV) pic is a Schilke P5-4 with a Blackburn leadpipe.

From those options the Artisan will leave you less likely to want an upgrade.

The Yamaha 6810 IMO is cheaper for a distinct reason, it's not made as well and will leave you feeling like you own an instrument you don't WANT to play.

I have the Yamaha 9830 with Blackburn lead pipes and I love it.
Many have and swear by the Schilke p5-4 to the point where that's about as "standard" as it gets.

Thank you all so much for the qualified answers you´ve given!

The prize does matter nowadays when I don´t teach anymore.
I´ve retired and my wife thinks that our money should go also
to other things than horns (can you imagine!?!?).

With an infinite bank account I would probably buy them all but
at this point in life cheap is equal to good . . .

Make sure to look at used ones if you are tight on cash. I bought a well-used Yamaha picc for a grand and got no wife complaints Or get a better horn for the same money, e.g. there is a Schilke P5-4 in the TH marketplace in your price range which will be an awesome horn. Marketplace here, eBay, Reverb, etc.
