For a near flugelhorn sound on trumpet try Steve Dillard’s JAZZ mpc made by Mark Curry and patterned after a 3C piece owned by Arturo. They’re affordable, too.

Mine must precede 1939 in that it has the attachment points for the mechanism though unfortunately, the mechanism is missing.
Plays nicely with the stock mouthpiece which doesn't agree with my chops. Plays just alright with a modern mouthpiece.
If I ever get motivated I'll be shopping for a better mouthpiece, new leadpipe, and if I can find or make it, the tuning mechanism. |
Regarding mouthpiece for an 80A. I saw an old thread recently where someone said that the original mouthpiece sold with the 80A was a Conn 4. The poster said that with that mouthpiece, the horn really sang. So I found one and got it. He was right. Perfect sound and very responsive. I love it.
Oh, and my 80A is from 1943. _________________ Richard

The 80A was made from the late nineteen-teens until the 1970s. The Conn Precision mouthpieces, like the 4, didn't come out until the mid-1930s. I have a 1923 Conn 80A and the much newer Conn 4 I have (still a pre-1958 specimen) isn't "magic" in my 80A.
That said, the Conn 4 I have really makes my 1921 Conn 10A Vocal cornet "sing" when in the key of C. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

The link I posted takes you to a page with a menu on the left that includes a link to his Signature Mouthpieces. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I’ve had a Conn 4 Precision and numerous Conn 4 Improved Precision mouthpieces, and none of them have ever made any horn I’ve owned sing, including a 1954 80A. They just don’t agree with me... _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |
