''Jon Hassell, the influential American avant-garde composer who invented the global-minded “fourth world” musical aesthetic, has died aged 84. In a statement, his family said the “iconic trumpet player, author and composer” died in the early hours of 26 June, after just over a year of health complications.''

Jon Hassell,

He wasn't just an innovative trumpet player, the music he created was really one of a kind and his conception of what a trumpet could sound like was singular. His electronic manipulation of sound/musical space was groundbreaking and he was highly influential especially in the world of electronic/new music.

Check out Power Spot for an example of what his music was like.
Farafina-Flash of the Spirit is another album definitely worth listening to.

John

I've been listening to him ever since Vernal Equinox came out! The thing I first posted was from a newspaper here in the UK. I don't need his work explaining to me, been a huge fan for 30 plus years!

This one really stings. A true innovator as a trumpet player, electronic musician, and composer. Utterly unique in sound and approach. If you haven't heard any of his work, get some of his CDs (mp3s, LPS, cassettes, whatever) immediately. If you've heard some of his work, check some of his OTHER work, cause the breadth of his aesthetic was vast.
