|
|
Hi,
I've got interested in a horn on eBay recently.
Since the serial # is a pretty important factor for this particular horn,
I asked the seller the #. Then, I received the following response:
"We are unable to give out the serial number information to anyone but the winning bidder.
This is for security and privacy purposes."
I initially thought it is okay if it is their way.
But, I am somewhat curious about the reason now.
I also sometimes sell and buy horns through the web but
always provide the serial info if someone asks it privately.
But, can this potentially cause a problem with my security and privacy?
Please let me know if there is something I need to know.
I appreciate any of your advice or experience.

There is/was an old scam where if you posted something for sale and included the serial number somewhere in the listing, someone could report it as stolen to the police (citing the serial number as proof of ownership) and have the item reclaimed (stolen from the original owner). This was probably more common with local sales in the early internet days, but I’m sure the practice is kept up by the same people who email me weekly telling me I’ve won the lottery. The serial number is a sort of “private information”, and most people only want the first few digits to determine the year of manufacture, so the common practice is to X out the last few digits. |

That’s interesting to know. I always wondered why people would not give full serials. Makes sense. In Europe I often see photographs of the valve blocks showing the full serial number, so I am not sure how much of a problem this really is, but being careful never hurts.
Not giving any info on the serial sounds fishy to me, though. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

Thanks for the input, Goby.
I am realizing that revealing serial # info can be an issue.
Will take care of it, when I sell my horns later.
To be fair to the seller, he did provide a range of manufacturing years.
The thing is that the range is not that informative,
containing more than 10000 serial numbers when it is converted. |

Usually giving a serial number a 42XXX is a way to date a horn without disclosing the entire number. |
