I need to replace the 25 lead pipe on my old Strad Model 37 due to red rot. I'm thinking about replacing it with a 43. Can anyone share their experience with a 43? I want the horn to be a little more free blowing.

Thank you.

43 for me. The original leadpipe on my Bach 43GH in the signature was a 25. Liked the horn, bought it on the spot and played it from 1992 to 2015 in the 43GH/25 configuration. When I had the horn redone in 2015 and the leadpipe had given in to red rot, I tested a 25 and a 43 pipe and liked the 43 MUCH better. More open, more resonant, and a little darker sound.

You may also want to think about an LR25 pipe. Never tried it but it seems to open up the horn w/o losing brilliance.

I’ve had a 43 / 37 combo. It was more open than a 25. A little brighter. But for me the intonation was squirrelly. But it could have just been something else about my horn. Some people like that combination and don’t have any issues

You might also want to try a 25-O or a 7 pipe. Both are more open than a typical 25 pipe.

Dr. Valve and Charlie Melk use these pipes for replacements and upgrades.

Something I forgot to say: I am not generally a fan of the 37 horns, but I did play a 37 a while ago that had a custom leadpipe by Martin Böhme. That was a quite impressive horn (with a really ugly silver/antique/blackish/dunno what finish ). So, if you are close to a custom shop or can make someone send you leadpipes for testing, yes, that could be a very interesting option as well.

Charlie Melk put a MTV525 on my Back 37. Love the results. Charlie will also let you test 3 or 4 lead pipes for a week or so. I had 4, narrowed it down to the 2 that felt right for me, took those 2 to an acoustically favorable room and had my wife pick the one that sounded right to her.

a 25-O would be a little more free blowing without going to the characteristics of a 43. If you're willing to stray from the two you mentioned, a 7 is also more free blowing with more roundness and warmth to the character.

I had a 190S37 that I wanted to open up a bit. Initially, I put a Bach "C" shaped tuning slide on it. I later put a 25-0 leadpipe on it. Both helped, but I perceived that the "C" tuning slide opened it up more than the 25-0 leadpipe.

Take care,

About 25 years ago, the leadpipe on by 43 lightweight got red rot, too. A friend at the music repair store loaned me a 25-O, a 43, 44 and 7 and I played them for several days.
The 25-O was pretty good, would have been my 2nd choice. The 7 was a little dark, I forget about the 44, but I settled on the 43. It is pretty bright on an already-bright and responsive horn, but I've used it now a long time, and it's been a good fit. Intonation is good; I often use a Bach Megatone mouthpiece to take a little edge off when I play in our church orchestra.

I've three early Elkhart 37s and two got new leadpipes. In both cases I went with the OEM 25 pipe. I probably should have considered other options but stuck with the original because that was the way the horn was designed. Also, one of them had already been blueprinted so I didn't want to mess with it any more. I haven't heard a lot of people changing leadpipes on 37s but about 50% of the Bach C trumpets seem to have aftermarket pipes... not sure why.

I put a Blackburn pipe on a Bach 37. It was ok and made the horn more playable, but it also, IMO, changed the character of the horn and it was less "Bachish" afterward.

i have both a 7 and a 43.

i put the 7 on my 1968 LB Strad and it sounds marvelous
it took all of the edge of the 25 pipe off and opened it up
it is just an amazing transformation for a horn that i have had for 40 years.

now i put that same pipe on one of my LA Ambassadors and.voilà
another completely different horn. i have a 43 on another LA Ambassador
and that horn is fantastic for any type of all around
playing that you will do

i will stick with the 43 on the Ambassador and probably do the same to another of my LAs

i say try it.

Interesting aside: why are there several different Bach leadpipes for Bb trumpet but all the C pipes appear to be "variations" on the 25?

You can get all of the leadpipes made for a Bach Bb, for C trumpet as well.
