I should have asked --
1) What is your price range (or can we assume up to $4200, since you felt that was "reasonable" )?
2) Do you think you would prefer medium bore (.453") or large bore (.468")?
3) Would you prefer a restored horn?
4) Would you consider one of the modern clones (e.g., Adams A9, Schilke Handcraft, Kanstul 1603, etc.)? (NOTE: The Schilke and Kanstul are/were only available in large bore.) |

Thank you Halflip for all your answers and for the questions. Yes of course I am on the market That's why I was asking about this horn.
I have looked at the one you recommend. It's nice, although at $3200 the price is $500 higher than the average of $2700, and it's a medium bore.
To answer your questions:
1) What is your price range (or can we assume up to $4200, since you felt that was "reasonable" )?Yes, up to around 4000 for a working, good condition, plated horn with full bell engravings would be the highest amount. Other horns, not plated, dented, de-lacquered, without engravings, should be priced accordingly: much less expensive.
2) Do you think you would prefer medium bore (.453") or large bore (.468")?
I think I would prefer a large bore, but it's not a deal-breaker.
3) Would you prefer a restored horn?Definitely. No project horn. I've had these. Never again.
4) Would you consider one of the modern clones (e.g., Adams A9, Schilke Handcraft, Kanstul 1603, etc.)? (NOTE: The Schilke and Kanstul are/were only available in large bore.)
I was not aware that these were clones.
In fact, I do not really understand the difference between Martin Committee, Martin Handcraft Committee, MC DeLuxe, etc, and the period differences according to year of manufacture. |

There's a horn listed as "Mid 1940’s Committee. Medium bore. Refurbished by Charlie Melk" in the marketplace right now for $1,900.00. The photos show a horn that looks pristine. What's not to like? _________________ HERMOKIWI |

The link above provides some background.
The clones I mentioned were designed to look and play like a Martin Committee. Google them and check them out.
Confusingly, there is another player out there: www.martinbrasswind.com
I don't know who is making their horns for them, though.
Since you are very specific about wanting a plated large-bore horn with full engraving, I'm starting to think that you would do better to buy one of these new horns. (Although I bought a used standard Committee in good shape and had it overhauled, engraved by a pro who knew the Martin patterns, and then gold plated.)
Finally, you are welcome! I'm happy to help. I never dreamed I'd become Mr. Halflip the Martin Committee concierge! |

Is this the company that is working with BAC to reproduce the committee? There is a scion of the Martin family attempting to do this.
If so I seem to remember that they have not been responsive to potential customers.

Satchel - check out this site. It provides a little history, pics and a short description of the models.

I believe you are correct.

That's too bad, because if they're working with BAC the trumpet is probably being made using Kanstul 1603 tooling, and the 1603 was thought by some (Wallace Roney in particular, so I've read) to be the most successful Committee clone in terms of replicating the playing characteristics of the original horn. |

Thanks LittleRusty and Ronman.
Halflip wrote: | Since you are very specific about wanting a plated large-bore horn with full engraving | Not really. I'm only specific that I want a fully functional horn, ready to play. The rest will just depend on the price.
Thanks once more for the links.

It is possible that things have changed on the responsiveness. It seems like the discussions were a while back. |

Got it. In that case, good shopping . . . and HERMOKIWI's suggestion is worth a good long look. |

Thank you. Yes, Hermokiwi's suggestion is a good one. Thank you for the suggestion Beyon16. The shopgoodwill one is is in bad shape, and I'd want to avoid a project horn, even at that price. |
