Some absolutely killing Woody Shaw on this previously-unreleased live date from 1970:

The group is fantastic, with Carlos Garnett on tenor, Harold Mabern on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and the leader (Roy Brooks) on drums.
Woody is in incredible form here, with chops for days and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of ideas. The vibe is very Coltrane Quartet-ish in terms of urgency and power.
Just mind-blowing stuff, and you can stream the whole thing on Spotify or purchase on CD or 180g vinyl. |
