This is the longest recorded trumpet solo I’ve ever heard someone play. Chet blows for 15 minutes straight, no joke, his solo end right on the 15 minute marker. You’d figure it’d be Freddie or Woody playing 15 minute solos, trying to follow in Trane’s foot steps. But it’s Chet! And he sounds strong throughout, plenty of double time and even still playing upstairs like 13 minutes in. And in typical Chet fashion, always finding beautiful new melodies and steering clear of cliches. Dig it:

Here's 27 minutes of indefatigable, irreproachable, and insane solo soloing from Peter Evans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VWbxKzXIjU&t=6s _________________ 1936 King Liberty No. 2

Chet was UNREAL! I have a bootleg somewhere of him playing on Ray's Idea for like 10 minutes. Was recorded in the 80's.
Thanks for the link, Craig. _________________ www.mikesailors.com |

This is very cool!
Is there any info about the horn he played in this tune?
I guess it is probably Conn 38B, right? |

Are those changes based on a standard? Probably is, but my brain just ain't firing today!
I've mentioned it before, but I actually like Chet's later playing better. He might not have been quite as good of a trumpet player, but I think his lines were more developed.

I don't think so. It's a Russ Freeman tune Chet recorded with Freeman when they had their early 50s quartet. If you have the original "Spaces" fake books, there's a lead sheet in the first volume. _________________ Jeff Helgesen
