Just picked up locally a BSC TR105 Millennium silverplate horn. Not a horn I would normally get a chance to try as they are not common in Canada but the seller had just moved from Luxemboug and was selling his sons horn.

These are made by Tomomi Kato and are semi hand made - so I believe similar to Stomvi USA, Cannonball, etc, he sources parts, tweaks in-house and sells.

First impressions are good. Nice tone. Even throughout register. Valves are smooth.

The valves are UCM piston valves - never heard of those - does anybody have any idea about them?

Thanks

This is a horn I have never heard of before. What catches my interest though is the name. In 2000, Holton made a run of 100 "TM-2000 Millennium Edition" trumpets (lightweight Bach Strad copy body with a standard weight 37 bell in silver with extensive gold on trim, flare and slides). They were so successful that the horn was then mainstreamed for the remainder of Holton's existence (only 2007 sadly) as the T-105.

Is this name co-incidence, or is there some relationship there ??

Here is a link to the Brass Sound Creation site.

http://www.brasssoundcreation.org/

My guess would be a coincidence but that said it does look similar to a STRAD.

The founder of BSC, Tomomi Kato, is Japanese born now living in Luxembourg.

At one point, ~1996, he was working with Amati. I suspect that this instrument might be made by them, although Tomomi does have the training to both design and build instruments.

I suspect the coincidence of using the term “millennium” has more to do with the timeframe and approaching end/start of two millennia.

I may be wrong but I think Tomomi Kato used to work with/for these folks https://www.musik-kroeger.com/trumpets
Their trumpets are known in Germany but from what I hear they very rare and uncommon.

In an article from Luxembourg Times they made this statement - he became workshop manager of the company Kroger. In 1996, Kato decided it was time to go it alone.

So yes Brassnose - looks like he did work at Kroger.

OK, so I got something right My teacher actually plays a Kato trumpet and is very happy with it. Due to Corona I have never played it but he has been happy with it for a few years now. And he gets quite sound from it, too.

From what I understand from an ACB review by Trent on the Kato KAT 5 trumpets - the BSC trumpets would be his higher end ones. He started the Kato line to have something a little more affordable.

Not the same model but I love this video. The BSC trumpets are really nice.
