For Classical music, or music you'd generally want a darker sound on, do you prefer a heavier weighted mouthpiece, such as VB Megatone, or a normally weighted one? |

I prefer a standard exterior design, allows more colors in the sound. In general, I find the heavier weight mouthpieces (Bach Megatone, Yamaha GP, etc - or added weights like Curry makes) give a darkness but also limit the shades of tone. There is a time and place for that quality, but not the norm for me. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

Some heavy mouthpieces do look cool, but I have gone back to standard weights for the exact same reasons that Zaferis mentioned. The Lotus is the one exception but then again, my Bach is not a lightweight horn, rather middle of the road, so it’s a nice match. Plus the Lotus (to me, need to weigh it) feels lighter than the Monette or Yamaha heavy blanks. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

I use a Bach 1.5 b and a 3b megatone currently with my Bach 72 reverse. I love the sound I get and every lesson I take my instructor comments on my sound, so it must be doing something right. _________________ Current horns

This was one of the best things I've ever watched. Thank you. I've always wondered about all those issues. _________________ Richard

I took a screen shot of the comparison chart at the end of the video.

That chart is helpful, thanks for posting that. Have been interested in trying some different weight mouthpieces.
Not sure why that quote came out so huge... |
