a simple question, why don't we do like trombonists and call the notes by their name?

Buy a C-trumpet and you can.

Ok - so clearly you guys know more about this than I do. I'd always assumed that the trombone was a concert pitched instrument. Apparently it isn't.

And it is a good question.

I know nothing. But it's my understanding that a tuba, euphonium, baritone, and trombone are all Bb instruments. And for some reason, it was decided that they would be non-transposing instruments and read in concert pitch. There are some exceptions (treble clef baritone, for example, is a transposing instrument).

Ummm... not really. Tubas come in a variety of keys. Mine is in EEb, for example.

The thing here is that bass clef instruments tend to be written in C, and treble clef instruments tend to be all over the map. There's a lot of historic precedent for that.

Yes, tubas come in all kinds of keys (reminds me of some higher brass instrument called the trumpet ) BUT tuba music is always in concert pitch (AFAIK), i.e. the tuba player reads a C and plays a concert C. Not so with the trumpet, hence the confusion.
