Been looking at them for bass trumpet because they also make smaller sizes. Which blank do you play and how does the rim feel?

| I got the #4 16.5 inner rim dia. I'm not sure why this mouthpiece isnt being talked about. Best medium cup piece I've ever played. If you go to their site the guy who made them as a result of 20 years of the best mouthpiece making out there. They look retro, they get the weight and mass exactly right balanced! He says it makes the horn easier to play. The high register is so easy. The sound and rim are great. I wish I had had this mouthpiece throughout my playing career. Awesome! |

| The # 4 is a 16.5 inner rim so like a 3c ish Monette B6ish . They have like 5 sizes and they all have comfortable medium cups. The #3 isc16.75 so like a Mt. Vernon 3c inner rim I would say. The rim is comfortable. You can go to Griego trumpet mouthpieces |

| Brett is there any specific reason why the Griego mouthpieces work so well in the X13? I just got one and it's been the best fit in my X13. And how close of tolerance do you get every X13 to blow the same? |

If you want to know why the Griego piece fits so well with the X-13 I would suggest asking Christan. I am not familiar enough with his trumpet mouthpieces or the design genesis of them to say.
Because all of our instruments are handmade there are going to be natural variations from one horn to the next. The trick is to get every one of them to be the same, but different. Character. We always talk about it in terms of percentages. We have a benchmark of every model and we strive to have every production instrument fall into a range based on that benchmark. For something like a 590 Capri, that may be in the 5-10% range depending. For upper line instruments like the X-13, we are shooting for a 98-99%.
These differences come from the tolerances used in production. Every part has a very tight +/- tolerance associated with it. Occasionally, the sums of those seemingly insignificant +'s and -'s add up to be an appreciable difference. Obviously, the goal is to have any +'s negated by a - and vice versa, but occasionally there is a lack of balance and the final product reflects that. The trick then is in identifying to offender and making the appropriate adjustments to correct the imbalance.

Correct. If, say, one is out of that range we try to correct the problem. If we can’t bring it into spec through various, non-invasive, means then it doesn’t pass and the instrument in question is rerun through the factory. Granted, this isn’t a fool proof process, but it’s how we handle it.

| Yeah, I have a Griego-Ashton #3 I ordered recently. It's a very nice mouthpiece similar in size to an ACB MV3C or Monette B4S, feels great. Thumbs up. Shank is slightly shorter than standard but not as short as a Monette. Rim is pretty round,cushiony feeling to me. Sound is strong and clear. |
