What is the best method of cleaning out the 2nd valve tube/slide of a piccolo trumpet? I know there is no slide so how do you get to the gunk that might accumulate in that tube? Scott

Mine comes off.

Try a flexible brush, like a plastic snake, working it in from the bottom of the valve casing.

I tried working a flexible brush in from the bottom but I wasn't able to do so, Also, my concern was that I didn't want to score the casing so I didn't try real hard. The brush did not seem to be able to make a 90 degree turn and if it did I am certain I wouldn't be able to make a U turn in the tube. Maybe a heavy string tied to a small piece of chamois? scott

It's been my experience that when cleaning a horn, there isn't much that gets into the second valve slide. In all my years of playing and cleaning my horns, I think the most I've ever done is rinse it out with warm soapy water - I can't recall ever needing to scrub anything out of the 2nd valve slide, even on my Bb trumpets that get played all the time.

I think that cbtj51 has the right idea - if you feel you must do something, the BlowDry method is probably as good as anything else.

You could always saw it off to see if there's anything up in there.

Then you'll need to sell it...for parts.

hahahahahaha!!!

I remember when the original Spitballs were introduced. It was when I was in high school. No shortage of entertainment had by launching them across the band room. Not to mention the horror when passing one through a horn that had never been cleaned. Good times.

Don't eat a pizza and wash it down with beer right before playing your picc and I doubt there will be much in there to clean out.

I'm with the "leave it alone" contingent.

Every action has a potential risk and a reward.

The risk is messing up the valve casing or dropping the thing while you are trying to wash it.

The reward is probably an imperceptible change (if there even is a spec of debris in the slide) in how the instrument plays.

Soak it in a bath occasionally and be careful with your expensive instrument.
