I have heard and read that he played a few. John Madrid was a fan of Bud Brisbois so for a while he too played a custom Bert Herrick. He also played a Jet-Tone for a while and he later played another piece but I am not sure of what it is either...

Johnny Madrid always kept two "setups" on the bandstand (two different trumpets, with two different mouthpieces).

His "high note" setup was a Schilke B2 trumpet with a Giardinelli copy of Rigby Powells mouthpiece. Rigby was a guy who played on Woodys band in the late 1960's/early70's. The mp was very shallow.

I'm pretty sure his other horn was a Constellation. I don't know remember what mp he used for strait ahead "lead playing".

Chris

Hi there,

I remember him playing a S42 part of the time and I think it was one of the two horns he had on the bandstand.

I'll check with someone who would know, and either he or I will get back with the info on this.

Johnny was one of the best trumpeters I've ever met, and one of the nicest gentlemen I've been privilaged to meet in my life.

Sincerely,

John Mohan

Hi there,

I contacted my friend who one of Johnny's best friends. Here's what he had to say:

Yo John!
Welcome back to the US and good luck on auditions. I'm not a member of Trumpetherald so I'll answer you. I looked at the thread and it's mostly correct. For all the time I knew John (from 1975 till he died) he used the following:
-------------------------------
Main trumpet: 1975 to about 1981-Schilke B6L with berrylium tuning bell, Reeves 42/S 692s and Reeves Alignment.
Upstream horn: 1975 till he died: Calicchio (not sure of the model, but I believe it was a large bore), Reeves copy of the Giardinelli Rigby Powell rim with a shallow "ES" cup and copy of the Giardinelli Rigby Powell backbore and Reeves Alignment.
-------------------------------
In about 1981 he switched from the B6L to an S42 with a Reeves Alignment.
Shortly after that he changed to a 42/M 692s for his main horn.
-------------------------------
After he got sick he switched to a Yamaha heavywall trumpet (Reeves alignment) (6335 HGS, I believe) and played this sporadically during his illness.
-------------------------------
When he switched to the M cup he said that he was finally blending his upstream and downstream embouchures into one with good success.
-------------------------------
Hope this is of interest.
