Hello Folks,

This is my first post here, looks like an informative site!

I want to get back into playing after 25 years and have decided to look for a used horn.

Has anyone here dealt with thetrumpetshop.com ? I talked to the owner over the phone who seemed fine and gave me what sounded like a reasonable recommendation for someone getting back to playing of 3 trumpets I was considering. The website looks well thought out and very extensive, with multiple photos of each used horn for sale…. and there are a LOT of horns listed.

This question was asked in 2008 but didn't appear to get any responses. There was a post about an apparently non-reputable site with a similar name, 'trumpetshop' but that was a different site.

Thanks for any help...

Another online site that looks to have a good selection is centexbrass.com. There are at least a couple people here who say they've had good luck with them…. Still, that's a small sample size.

I'm getting these sites from the sticky list posted at the top of this forum, but in general, how do people check the track record of these sellers if not already familiar with them? Ebay at least shows feedback, quite often from a thousand or more transactions, and also provides some dispute resolution.
In some cases though it may take longer to find what you're looking for there.

Many people on here are not shy about posting their feedback on things, including trumpet sellers. You can find threads in the reveille forum. If the seller isn’t there then they most likely haven’t ticked anyone off. This does not constitute a positive recommendation nor is it totally reliable, but if they are there then be very careful.

BTW, don’t bother using the site’s search. It is useless in my opinion.

Add the search term “site:trumpetherald” when using Bing, Google, etc and you will get results limited to this site. It works *much* better.

From viewing the comments in 'thetrumpetshop.com' website, I get the impression that it is also currently (or recently) an active Ebay dealer.
You might search Ebay to find transactions from the seller.

Just to follow up here:

I can't say for sure one way or another as to the reliability of thetrumpetshop.com, however… Here a week after I sent him info to which he said he'd reply with an invoice I could follow through with or not on the particular trumpet I was interested in, I haven't heard a thing back. Just checked in my spam folder to make sure. No message or invoice.

On the phone he told me over the past 2 years things had been rough business-wise (presumably because of the pandemic) and that he had a lot of horns and needed money. Said he works out of his home. I did ask him if he was on ebay, to which he said he wasn't but had been in the past. So there you have it. I doubt I would have purchased from him because I just didn't have much to go on.

I went to another site and got what I wanted. I'll do a separate post in a few days on that.

Clay Collins owns Centex Brass. I have sold him a couple of trumpets in the last few years. My transactions with him have been very easy. His communication is also very good. Personally, I would not hesitate to buy a horn from him.

This is a difficult question, always. "Who can I trust on used horns/equipment...?" I don't know anything about <thetrumpetshop.com>, so this may all be a waste of your time and no reflection on them. I would not give a 2008 post much thought. I'm only a 3/4 year member here so there's not a lot of cred on me? but I've been playing, buying & selling horns since the 60's. Tottle's was the first service and used "dealer" I dealt with. (They were under the Boston Union hall, I think Osman's [Becker] is one of his protégées.) Anyway, there are some great people/dealers that can be found here on TH. I'm sure there are also a few clunkers.

Trent Austin/Josh at Austin Custom Brass has been great to me. So has Osman's. Josh Landress Brass is in my list of shops/people that I have had good business with and will continue to do so. Pickett Brass/Blackburn, always been good to me but I'm not sure if they sell used 'come-back' horns. Dillion's is another that comes to mind as having a good rep but no personal contact on my part. I'm sure there are many more but these are the ones that come to me with a quick thought. Reverb is OK because of the somewhat buyer protection they offer, I have bought from the site & it was alright. I've stayed away from eBay for a few years because of some poor dealings but not trumpet related.

The marketplace here is a pretty good reference point but as pointed out you need to be careful, as always.

Search this site as noted above. I personally don't mind paying a fair price to a reputable dealer, especially when it comes to used equipment. Set your budget and be patient. Search and read, this is a great site for trumpet players. ...of course this is just my opinion. Good luck and have fun with your playing when you find a good horn.

Thanks guys.

Mike, Clay at Centex Brass is who I went to. Received the horn yesterday. My experience matches yours.

Thank you ECLtmpt2 for the honorable mention, but it was Bob Osmun that was an apprentice to Bill Tottle. Bob is ten years my senior, and worked for Tottle starting in 1967 (I would have been in the 2nd grade back then). See timeline here. https://www.brasshistory.net/Tottle%20History.pdf

Our focus is primarily repair, manufacture of mouthpieces, and sales of new instruments, we rarely sell any used instruments these days.

Best of luck!
