So I hear, no pun intended.

My motive for starting this post is this: Now that I own a '47 Standard, should I just be happy - I am really impressed with it - or do I get greedy and say "If this is awesome, what about the other models ? Maybe I should keep buying them and if so, which way is up ? I mean which models are indisputably better than the Standard ?"

I played an Olds Super exclusively for a couple of years a little while back, and owned a Recording and Super Recording. As for which models are best, I think it’s all about what you prefer-all three have their own unique blow and tone, and build quality on all Olds horns is superb. My preference with the Supers are one’s from the ’40’s and earlier. I had a ’39 Super that I ended up selling-I’m still kicking myself for letting that one go.

Bill you are too modest...

This is the trumpet player for SANTANA.

Love all the posts in this thread, very informative and fun to read. Makes me wonder how heavenly those trumpets must play, if they're that much better than the already superb 'regular' Olds instruments.

I love all of the older Olds family. For me by Super Recording is unlike any other horn. It provides a tone and projection that is unique. Many people who know my playing have some up and said "you can't imagine how good you sound in the back of the hall".
So, in front of the horn, I think its the best horn I've ever played. However, from behind the horn, its not always the easiest horn to play. I don't mean to say that it is difficult but it is very mouthpiece sensitive

Yamahaguy, I still have a '47 Super-great horn. The '39 was magical though :)

Ok not that we have the same facial anatomy but your comment obviously begs the question as to what worked for you in terms of mouthpieces ?

Thanks for the shout out and kind words Mendez :) I stopped doing that gig in '16 when he downsized the band w/o horns. Since then I've been freelancing and working on my new album.
