about 6 months ago my valves started being noisy for first three to 4 minutes when playing. Any ideas?

Then they are very quiet!

My fingers do that, but at my age it is arthritis. I suppose that you have looked to see if any of the caps or finger buttons are loose. Your valve guides might be out of the slot when you start, maybe. What horn are you playing? Sometimes your springs can get a little bit off the pocket on the valve guide. Upper valve felts may be out of the pocket in the upper cap. Are your valves really dry when you start? Do you oil them before you play. So you pull the pistons to oil them and put them back? That may be why valve guides haven't settled down.

Just spitballing here.

I have checked all those things. My valves were redone 5 years ago and had been great ever since, until this noise started 6 months ago. I oil every other day, but whether I do or not makes no difference. I put it away and the valves are quiet. I pick it up the next day and they are noisy again for 3 minutes! It is driving me nuts!

This is on my King Super 20.

All three valves or just one?

This is a long shot, but is it possible one of the top valve caps is a just a little loose? Maybe after the horn warms up a slight gap between it and the valve body is closed?

I had a bit of a 'rattle' occasionally that can sound like loose valve caps BUT it just needed a tiny bit more pressure when seating my GR mouthpiece into my Schilke B1 trumpet receiver. At first I really thought it was my valves! So perhaps after a few minutes playing you may have seated the mouthpiece properly?

Thanks, All!

I checked, and it is not the valve caps (top or bottom). They are very solid. I had my King Super 20 SilverSonic Symphony model rebuilt last year, and it came back with a new receiver and a new tuning slide. The receiver could be the problem, or part of it. The Tuning slide is so loose, I had to go to a heavy sticky grease to keep it from falling out. Perhaps that is rattling until it expands a bit with warm air. A new first valve slide won't work at all, as it was replaced/rebuilt and the angle of the parallel tubes is slightly off. That could also be a factor.

Perhaps I am lucky that the rattle stops after a few minutes! am so disappointed with this rebuild!

Thanks again,

Chuck

After final check, mouthpiece I got 6 months ago needs a firmer twist to seat properly in new receiver. Again, Thanks!! It is quiet now right from the start!!!

i have had the same issue, thought it was the valve caps or maybe a worn out spring.

Finely took it in for repairs, the issue turned out to be piston slap!

Since my horn is a 1948 Selmer Grandprix - due its age I decided not to have the valves and or bores redone, because they could not guarantee the the horn would sound the same.

Instead I started using Hetman's Classic Piston Lubricant 3 on the valves, it dulled the clicking somewhat but not entirely.
