Last Thursday the great Dutch flügelhorn player Ack van Rooyen died, 91 years old. A real loss of a great player, a fantastic teacher and a wonderful guy.

Wow, I used to see him regularly when I lived in Germany. Always enjoyed his playing.

That's one of my favorite renditions of "Round Midnight".

He was a true master of his instrument, as well as a wonderful improviser. And he had a distinctive, peerless tone on flugelhorn.

It’s a sad thing, and a great loss. Not just to his family, but to the world as well. He was a great inspiration.

First heard him years ago on an Eberhard Weber album. Really nice sound and concept. RIP

I just now saw this. Sorry to hear this - I knew him from those fantastic Bert Kaempfert recordings.
