It's personal. I would probably go for the Connstellation.

What kind of playing do you expect to be doing? What name player's sound is closest to what you're aiming for? Plese don't make your question so vague.

I haven't played many of those models so have no opinion about them, and have no way of knowing what might be a good match for you. Bearing that in mind, the horns that would be of most interest to me would be the Bach 18037 and the two Benges.

Obviously, the best course of action would be to play them all and pick the one you like.

I don't know much about any of those horns but I have tried a Claude Gordon Benge and liked it very much. It seemed very easy to play. If I were to pick a horn without trying it, that's probably what I would go for.

Warm regards,
Grits

If it were me, I'd use this as my short list:

Conn 22B Victor 1959
Conn 38B Connstellation 1965
Olds Super Star
Olds Custom Crafted
Los Angeles made ML Benge Model 3 and Claude Gordon model
Olds Recording, 1 brass and 1 silver
Bach Strad LR180S43

I left the Model 37 Bachs off the list because they seem to fight me above the staff (probably due to my limitations as a player more than anything else).

What trumpet/trumpets/cornets do you have at this time?

As for me - my my that's a nice list - If I just get to have one - I guess it would be an Olds Recording. Stick the appropriate mouthpiece in and you can take it anywhere.

Of course Benges are so nice to play ... then again a Connstellation is pretty efficient ...

I'm not going to try and over complicate your question.

So, I like that CG Benge. I prefer the lightweight free blower horns. I think that would be my top pick.

I think any of those strads are worth looking at also.

The Benge or the Strads. Whether any truly warrant $1400 depends entirely on their condition and playability.

I would be inclined to try some of them, if possible. No other way to really tell.
But I will say stay away from the Yamahas. The ones listed are the student models they've made in the last 25 years and they aren't as good as the 2320 that preceded them. They aren't even close to the Yamaha pro models.

Since the trader is near you, I would arrange to play the horns. Take your time, enjoy them. When you find one you like, put a deposit on it and then come back another day to be sure. Do not feel you have to buy one of them. If you play enough, the horn will find you if there is one for you in that bunch. You might cull the lower end horns and focus on the better horns in the collection, depending on what you want. You have a great opportunity to try a bunch of horns. That is the best way to find one that fits.

Quick rundown, with my general thoughts.

Conn Copper Bell Coprion Director - older student model with cool bell
Yamaha TR1 Advantage - newish Yamaha student model
Yamaha YTR200AD - ditto
Yamaha YTR2335 - ditto
Conn 22B Victor 1959 - nice older pro model Conn
King Tempo II - student model - possibly older
Bach Mercedes II - older intermediate horn
Bach Omega - sort of newer upper intermediate horn, sort of Strad
Jupiter STR600 - student horn
Besson 709 - nice Kanstul built intermediate horn
Blessing XL w/1st valve trigger - Technically a pro horn, but really intermediate
Conn 38B Connstellation 1965 - sweet older professional horn
Olds Super Star - pro Olds from end of their run
Olds Custom Crafted - ditto
Los Angeles made ML Benge Model 3 and Claude Gordon model - sweet
Olds Recording, 1 brass and 1 silver - very nice pro horns
Bach Strad 180S37 - the standard pro horn
Bach Strad LT180S37 - lightweight standard
Bach Strad LR180S37 - reversed leadpipe standard
Bach Strad LR180S43 - Bach 43, usually my favorite Strad

It depends on personal taste. I am generally not a huge fan of the Bach 37, but they're good horns, just usually not my pick. The LT one might be nice, haven't played many reverse pipe ones. The Olds Super Star and Custom Crafted are interesting, because I know of them, but haven't played them. Also, it depends on price as well.

As another commenter mentioned, the real ticket is playing them and see what clicks. Sight unseen, what I'd be interested in is:

Los Angeles made ML Benge Model 3 and Claude Gordon model because Benges are great.
Conn 38B Connstellation 1965
Olds Recording, 1 brass and 1 silver
Bach Strad LR180S43
Conn 22B Victor 1959
Besson 709

If they don't want much for the Besson 709, it's a very solid horn. If they want a decent price.... hard to say. I got mine from super duper clearance on WWBW for nearly a literal song to be my backup before I had too many horns.

Maybe it’s a personal thing but id go for the one of the Olds Recordings depending on the year. The older recordings are more desirable than later ones. I played a 52 LA Model recording for a few years and got into All State band on it when I was in High School. Got a lot of good memories with the Olds Recording
