Hi everybody,
I have a question regarding Reeves rims. I am playing a Bach 3C for most of my work and I would like to switch to a Reeves mouthpiece S69 cup for commercial and show work and also for Big Band. I tried a 42 rim first, but it felt too small. Then I tried their 3C rim of the Classical series. I found this rim very different from a Bach 3C rim, although it is the same size. Would you think that a Reeves 43N rim would be closer to a Bach 3C rim regarding shape and feel? Thanks for your advices!

I highly recommend the Reeves Jerry Hey piece based on what you will be using it for...it's a 3C rim on a deepened shallow cup with a 28 drill. I've used them for years and I think they're just great...

You might try emailing (or calling) John Snell at Bob Reeves. He's a pleasure to deal with and very knowledgeable as well. I'm sure he'd be able to tell you the best match that most people feel works for those coming off a Bach 3C.
Good luck! Reeves pieces can be a great tool for a lead/commercial sound.

Why not get an extra Bach 3C and have Reeves cut the rim off for use with their underpart? That way you have the same rim that you know you like on both mouthpieces and you don’t have to worry about trying to match it

i had a rim cut off a few months ago at Reeve's and it was very fairly priced to have it done

they did it while i waited and replated the threaded underpart

i was extremely happy

43N rim is very close to the feel of Bach 3C but not the same , if you really like the 3C find one cheap and send it to shop to cut it , as for the underpart the 43S/69 is a real tool for commercial work.

Regards

I recently went to a thing at The Horn Trader where Reeves had sent down all of their mouthpieces and a couple of techs. They have a ridiculous variety of rims and bodies, and you can match just about anything there. I grabbed a 42269 that is close enough to my custom 'piece that it is usable, and it took MONTHS to get that custom piece set up.

What vintage is your preferred 3C rim (what does the stamping say)? Start there to find a comparison!

Gary,
It's deepened shallow cup. In between medium and shallow.

If you can find another 3C that feels close enough to the one you are playing, great. As suggested, have the rim cut off and threaded onto a Reeves backbore. When I was using a Reeves mouthpiece for commercial work and a Bach 1C for classical, I had Reeves copy my actual 1C rim and thread it onto one of their backbores, an S692s. The rims were virtually identical and the two pieces covered all the bases.
