DCT is the only thing I've found that helps and that I can play on. I'm told Carmex is good too but it can cause trouble if used too frequently.

From a drum corps guy who's marched from Minnesota to Orlando, and everything in between, DCT is the way to go. When I'm not on tour I use Burts Bee's quite often, but for harsh conditions, nothing beats DCT.

I never cared to use balms while I was playing, but before retiring at night, I have used Vicks Vapo-Rub or Mentholatum on my lips every night before I turn in (it also helps clear my sinus pressure). I spend a lot of time outdoors in the driest areas of Texas and New Mexico in all kinds of weather when I am not with no chapped chop problem.

Gosling's ChopSaver 100%
Amazing stuff. Everyone should have some on hand. I put it on every day after any playing session.

As the lead player/soloist for the Missouri State Pride band said: "It's magic!"

Anhydrous lanolin is good. You can also use it as slide grease -- its the same for most brands.

I just bought a new tub on eBay. You can melt it in the microwave and refill the small slide grease or Carmex jars.

I've used ChopSaver, Robinson's Remedies, and a number of other products in stick form. Although these are good basic balms, personally I don't care for the slight tackiness stick form products leave. I realize the stick form is convenient to carry in the case, gig bag or pocket, and is relatively inexpensive. However, I would like to mention a product that I just tried and which has both a convenient form factor, is very healing, and has much less stickiness: Lip Trick Vanilla Lip Mask from eightsaintsskincare.com.
This balm contains coconut oil, vitamin E and organic beeswax in a very light cream. It is contained in a .5 ounce easily-pocketable jar and can be applied with a finger, or with a clever applying stick that is now included with the product. The vanilla scent is very light. I have been using it for several weeks, typically at night before retiring, and in the morning if needed. My lips, which tend to chap in dry conditions, have never been in better, more comfortable shape.
The downside: compared to stick form lip balms, Eight Saints Lip Trick is expensive: $22.00 for a .5 ounce jar. However, I've found that a very little goes a long way, and I would venture a guess that one jar would last me 2 to 3 months.

Personally, I never want to put stuff on my lips while I'm playing. I've tried chopsaver, Robinsons, Burts Bees, Blistex, etc. I find that the best thing to help me during a gig is staying hydrated/not licking my lips as a nervous habit/not using the "octave key." You can play with wet lips without getting chapped lips more than your dry lipped colleagues! In my personal experience with really intense gigs, AFTERWARDS I will do a nice cool down playing wise. Then once I've relieved some tension from my face I make sure I am hydrated, I also use some lip balm with Vitamin E in it (I use Burts Bees), and if I'm really swollen then some ibuprofen. This has worked for me when I lived in warmer climates and colder climates. My point is that if your lips are chapped or swollen during a gig (outside of extreme playing or weather conditions) there are things you should look at (efficiency, pressure, hydration, nervous habits, etc.) before you result to balms to get you through the gig. This is just my personal experience, if what you are doing works great for you then keep doing it!

I put on Chap-Stick before playing, but drink from my water bottle after each number. Haven't had a split lip in a long time.

I just drink water, it’s GOD’s chapstick!

But in all seriousness, I use Burt’s Bees. Any flavor that doesn’t use peppermint oil as I have a sensitivity to it.
