Etude #7 by J.L. Small

These 27 Melodious Etudes by J. L. Small have been a welcome find for me. I knew nothing about them before just a couple of months ago.

After playing through and recording several of these, I hope you’ll agree with me that these are worthwhile etudes to be familiar with!

If you’re interested, these can be purchased here: https://qpress.ca/product/27-melodious-rhythmical-exercises-for-trumpet-j-l-small-download-pdf/

Thanks for taking a listen and I hope you have a great weekend!

“CHUMOV CHUESDAYS” continue with Etude #15 from 24 Etudes for Trumpet by Leonid Chumov

If you’ve been following along for the past few months, you will know that I’ve recorded the Wurm 45 Easy Studies and the Balasanyan 25 Melodic Etudes. These Chumov 24 Etudes would be a next logical step if one were looking for a progression.

Though most of these etudes are relatively short, they do progress to a higher degree of difficulty with an increased required range and with etudes written in all the different key signatures.

These etudes will challenge both the developing student along with seasoned professionals!

As we return to regular work weeks here in San Diego, and I need to re-familiarize with all of my trumpets, I made the decision to record all of these Chumov etudes on my Weimann Brass “Passion” Rotary C trumpet.

If you are interested, this book can be purchased here: https://qpress.ca/product/24-etudes-for-trumpet-chumov/

Thank you for taking the time to listen!

SOFIA GUBAIDULINA - Song Without Words

Written in 1977 - Russian composer Gubaidulina’s “Lied ohne Worte” is a beautiful piece of music for trumpet and piano.

Though not an etude, I love this melody and I encourage you to go find some recordings with the piano. The next recital I play will definitely include this piece.

Thank you for taking a listen and I hope you have a great weekend!

BRANICI Etude #2 from 17 Studii Melodice

As with many of these etudes from Brãnici's 17 Studio Melodice, this etude #2 starts off sounding a bit like Bach and then goes into some different directions and tonalities.

These are fun and challenging etudes to play. If you don't know these already, I highly encourage you to find these and start working on them!

Etude #6 by Oskar Boehme from 24 Melodic Studies in All Tonalities Opus 20.

As I continue to work through this Boehme book of 24 Melodic Studies, here is another one of those etudes that seem relatively easy to look at on the page - especially at the slow tempo - but then after nearly three minutes of playing from low F# to high Bb - you realize this is more challenging than you thought! LOL!

Thanks, as always, for taking a listen -I appreciate it!

BRANICI Etude #4 from 17 Studii Melodice

This Etude #4 by G. Branici is one of the "easier" etudes in this book of 17 Studies. The exception being in the last 2 measures. For some unknown reason, he changes up the articulations which made it exceedingly difficult to just nail it. LOL

Seriously though, I just couldn't hear it properly most times and this was the best I could come up with where I wasn't totally fumbling around and ruining really good takes.

Well - life goes on!

Thank you for taking a listen!

Etude #7 by Oskar Boehme from 24 Melodic Studies in All Tonalities Opus 20.

Marked "Con Moto" - This one doesn't need to go lightening fast - just try to play it smoothly and with forward motion.

In addition to working on smoothness - pay attention to the third valve along with trying to keep all the registers sounding the same.

This is the last etude video I'm releasing this year. For the next week and a half we'll re-share our Holiday Videos from last year and then STAY TUNED for four more new Holiday Videos as we get closer to Christmas!

Happy Holidays and thanks for taking a listen!
