In the 1980's I had the great fortune of visiting Franz at his trumpet museum in Pottstown. It was a spectacular collection of close to one thousand historic brass instruments, all in playing condition. Franz let me gawk for awhile and then told me to start playing the collection. I started with keyed bugles and worked my way through 19TH century cornets until I was told that lunch was being served. Franz actually gave me the keys to the cases and left me alone as he had to prep for a concert happening the next day! Back at it, I played 20TH century trumpets which included early Bachs up to a King owned by Dizzy Gillespie. Franz was a true gentleman and a very fine trumpet player who will be greatly missed by the brass community.

I visited his museum in Pottstown in the 80's also. I was maybe only 11 or 12 and I don't even remember how we had heard of the place. Maybe from something in one of the ITG journals? My dad must have seen it. We lived on Long Island and took a road trip to the Amish country in Pennsylvania and also stopped in to the trumpet museum. I remember there was also a doctoral student there that day, doing research for his thesis. Next time I see my parents I'll have to look for any photos we might have. It made an impression on young me, that's for sure. RIP Franz. |
