Fantasia #1 by Orlando Gibbons

Over the last several months, I’ve wanted to present more than just solo trumpet etudes and I’m thankful that when I approached Tim Saeger about recording these together, he immediately said YES! Unfortunately for him, that meant not only would he play, but he would also do the video editing and audio mixing - for which I’m also eternally grateful!

I first heard this Fantasia #1 played by The Meridian Arts Ensemble and have always enjoyed when this came up in a playlist over the years.

I’m sure many of you have heard and are familiar with this first Fantasia but may wonder why you haven’t heard the other 5 Fantasias after this. Well… let me be the first to admit that several of these next Fantasias are comically challenging, and we discovered why they aren’t regularly performed live by trumpet players LOL!

Tim and I both hope you enjoy this Fantasia #1 by Orlando Gibbons.

Thank you for taking a listen!

- Chris

Chris,

Very nice indeed. These keep me motivated to practice.

I am going to use them to encourage a friend to play some duets with me.

Thanks for posting.

Warm regards,
Grits

I think these were notated without dynamics but, historically, were they played that way? Of course we have no audio/media to use but what written references to dynamics were available for authentic performance practices?

Great playing, BTW. Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment.

The parts we were working off of did not have any dynamics. I’m sure there is someone else here on TH that could speak to the performance practice of the day. What Tim and I agreed to was to basically follow the musical line - and that seemed to work quite well.
