Weird idea, maybe I'm crazy, but here goes:
Long bell like this :
On a cornet like this :
1950s/60s Conn Directors and Pan American cornets (maybe some others?) have a lot of tubing between the valve block and the bell, so you could take off the bell etc and... stick on a straight bell, of course. Why? Because you can! =)
Here's the link to the bell, my better half put the kibosh on another project (I can't imagine why!) so if one of you is inspired to pursue it let me know how it works out. https://shopgoodwill.com/item/135253922
Happy corneting, everybody!
PS--does that crease on the bell seam look repairable? It sure isn't pretty. =\ _________________ 1971 Yamaconn cornet (my comeback horn)

Looks like you would need to add some tubing to the straight bell to get the right length to keep it in Bb and in tune with itself. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

At about 27” long, you’re probably right. Moar projection! 😆 _________________ 1971 Yamaconn cornet (my comeback horn)

You would get a much longer "herald" section starting with a JinBao rotary cornet, as its valve section is placed very close to the mouthpiece receiver:
Of course, assuming that the instrument above is a cornet and not a trumpet (but with a trumpet mouthpiece receiver, cf. the shank length of the accompanying mouthpiece). |
