I'm searching for the perfect mouthpiece for a 1911 Conn cornet and wondering if anyone on TH has tried a Yamaha 8D2 short shank which, if I read the Yamaha description correctly has a slightly narrower cup than a Bach 3 but with a large cup volume. Yamaha says is has a soft tone with good upper register.

I'm pretty sure that you're going to need a nonstandard shank for a horn of that vintage.

Hope not. It plays pretty well with a standard (modern) shank. I’m looking for better intonation and hoping a short shank will be the answer.

It's pretty small. Have you considered the Curry Vintage cornet mouthpieces. Pretty much any rim size you want.

You can also get the old Conn shank if you want it.
While conventional mouthpieces can be inserted and play, insertion depth is still a factor in "gap-less" cornets.

"lipshurt" http://www.meeuwsenmouthpieces.com/ has done some experimentation with the large bore Conn cornets. You can search his posts on TH on the subject.

Here is an article about Conn mouthpieces.

https://cderksen.home.xs4all.nl/ConnArticle34.html

Basically, all Conn cornets made before 1958 had a Conn, "propriety" short shank mouthpiece. But there is more to it, than length. The taper of the mouthpiece needs to match the taper of the receiver, and the early Conn short shank mouthpieces, have a slightly different taper, than many (or maybe even all) modern mouthpieces.

The good news, is that Curry makes short shank cornet mouthpieces, that have the proper taper for older Conn instruments.

Thanks! Just ordered a 3VC with a Conn shank/taper from Mark.
