Hi folks, been lurking for a little while, as I was very happy to find a community for comeback players when I considered picking up the horn again. Now that I've got one in the mail, I figured it was only proper to introduce myself.
I'm 38 and haven't played since I was 18. You could also say I've been on hiatus for 20 years, but my brain refuses to believe I'm that old (although my lower back is quite aware of it) I was primarily an orchestral French horn player and a pretty decent one by high school standards, but I had started on trumpet and kept it as a doubling instrument.
I've been learning piano for a few months now and started feeling the itch to play horn again. Last week I started digitizing the last batch of my old CDs and found an old Canadian Brass album. That sent me down a YouTube rabbit hole that ultimately landed on Ole Edvard Antonsen's performance of Napoli. I'd had a tough day at work and said screw it, time's a-wastin'. I'll always have a soft spot for French horn but the startup cost is eye-watering and the trumpet family is the clear winner in terms of variety of playing opportunities.
I decided on a King Master Super 20 cornet in what appears to be pretty good condition, save for a couple dings that look easily fixable. Based on the serial, I believe this to be a 1965 instrument. The bell says "Cleveland" rather than "Eastlake". Either way, I think it either predates the sale of King or was so soon after that it shouldn't matter.
I also picked up some mouthpieces to try out and see what I like (Bach 6, Yamaha 11E4, Wick 4.5). I selected these according to the following rigorously determined scientific criteria: 1) not super big 2) not super small 3) are "proper" cornet mouthpieces, and crucially 4) were available secondhand for $20-$30. Maybe I'll pick up something bigger to try as well, but I don't intend to be a cornet specialist so it seems I probably shouldn't go off the deep end with British mega-mouthpieces.
Anyways, I was going to cap this thread off with a request for some good resources, but this thread seems to be written just for me so I'll leave it at just one: what are some solo pieces you played in your first 1-2 months back that you really enjoyed? |

Welcome to the forum. You'll find a lot of great advice from some real pros around here. Enjoy, and enjoy your new (to you) horn. _________________ Wade

I second @Dayton 's response.
Have fun, try to take lessons. They are the quickest guide to what you need to work on.
For pieces to play. I suggest picking up a hymnal of some sort and just playing through it. Also, Arban's Art of Phrasing using Jennifer Marotta's videos as a guide, depending on where you are in your comeback.
