Back when I was a professional player, I would practice usually 4-6 hours a day. One of the keys to keeping everything working well was to rest during practice. For example, doing whole tone exercises - play the whole tone and count it out in your head. Then rest an equal amount of time. Same for scales, etc. This is the method I was taught in school, and it served me well for endurance and building great tone.

I'm a returning player as well, and I can understand the frustration. Don't give up!

I concur with the opinions of our colleagues about muscle exhaustion. Have you considered practicing no more than every other day to allow more recovery? I notice that my embouchure is markedly stronger after a day off.

As a physician, I would also point out the role of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D and magnesium in muscle health and performance. A deficit of either could hinder your progress. Consider supplementing with a multivitamin or making a visit to your primary care physician if you're overdue for a check-up and some basic labs, which can include vitamin D and magnesium levels.
