Just out of curiosity, does anybody know which arias/scenes the Arban “Art of Phrasing” exercises coordinate with in Il Trovatore (93-100 in the book)? Or any of the opera references in Arban? I have always wished the references were more specific and wondered if there were a resource to guide in that.

You might be able to cross reference the Arban titles with IMSLP. I bet there is a ton of those opera arias there.

Good luck

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. Are you simply familiar with the opera and able to connect the melodies aurally? Or is there a written resource that coordinates the pieces from the operas with the Art of Phrasing numbers? My copy of the Arban just gives the title of the opera for every single exercise, no specifications at all.

I want to create a unit for my students that starts with watching the operas and learning the melodies out of the Art of Phrasing, then connecting them with the fantasies that Arban wrote. I see a lot of room for some historical and cultural contextualization, the sky is the limit really.
