Woohoo! Had my first jazz trumpet lesson on Tuesday. It was awesome. I realized I’m a natural pro at jazz. Lol.
Thank God there are no wrong notes in jazz or I would be in trouble. |

No wrong notes but some poor choices and wrong rhythms. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Good for you!
A jazz teacher can help you build a good foundation, and get you on a path of life-long learning. Through college, I had two private teachers, one for trumpet and one for jazz. My jazz teacher at that time was a saxophonist (what instrument he/she plays doesn't necessarily matter). I started studying again with a jazz teacher last year (this time, with a jazz pianist).

Lessons are a big part of it, but most of the work is in listening to and studying the innovative players. That's where you build your vocabulary, improve your feel and establish your concept. _________________ '56 Martin Committee Deluxe #2 trumpet

My teacher wrote a piece for beginning jazz students to learn to play and sound good quickly! Autumn Mix. So, I listened to him play, they we played it together (little pieces). He played, then I played etc. That was the head. Then it was time to improvise (this is all in C). Just play. It was kind of fun. That was the first lesson. The second lesson we went over what I've been practicing and did some more improvisation. He has a track that I play along with. I got some C maj Triad Arpeggios to practice, continuing with the Autumn Mix Solo for the next lesson. |
