Considering having a light trumpet, bright, bright sound. What mouthpiece would you use (measures aside - I currently use a modern Bach 3c) to have a softer, slightly darker sound. Thank you all |

In my opinion the Bach 3C you can make it sound as dark as you want |

Bach 3 or 3B .
I use a Bach 7 and have no complaints.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

Well, I have a similar problem. I have a very light trumpet whose sound leans towards brightness and I moderate that with a Bach 6B. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Of course the Bach 3 or 3B. The problem is that both rims are totally different from the 3C.
You could switch to the Curry 3C, then use the 3TC for softer darker playing and keep the same rim shape.
If you are willing to spend more money, there are several choices that will let you keep a single rim shape. Pickett, Warburton, ACB etc. |

I feel I need to chime in as I use to play a really really light weight horn.
I get confused when people ask something like this.
You want a darker sound or more core to the sound? To me it’s different in my mind.
Core sound versus overtones can be controlled by mouthpiece blank shapes.
I’m not talking purely weight… Trent did a video once that you really needed headphones for, showing the same mouthpiece in different blanks, just moving around weight distribution made changes to core sound vs overtones. This also changes articulation.
Bigger/deeper/darker sound vs smaller/bright sound to me is controlled via cup depth. To me I think darkest= flugelhorn and brightest = piccolo trumpet.
So, what’s the actual goal? I did a recent post where I compared 4 mouthpieces, feedback was that the lighter ones had been brighter, but to me they just had less core and more overtones. The smallest being a little brighter as well.
Be interesting to see if some agree or disagree with my assessment, but in the end all feedback is good, we are all here to help each other learn and interpret.

Another option would be to play your 3C with a more open throat. Depending on what throat size you go with, that would take the edge off. |

Do you have a link to that, Marc? I've looked everyplace and just can't find it. I think it would be very interesting to listen to. Thanks, K- _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Austin Custom Brass 3C
In my experience: the rim has a softer bite, the throat and backbore are different than standard Bach and seems to give a warmer sound. It might be the "just a little different" you are looking for. The standard blank probably works well in your lightweight horn, but you could call them for expert advice. _________________ Justin Dickson

The curry 3BC might be a good option for you, if you want a little bit darker than a stock 3C. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |
