Simple question - I think. Were all Bessons that were built in the U.S. built by Kanstul? And if not, who else built them? Thanks

Pretty sure that was the case - Besson contacted Kanstul and did a deal. Make sure if you're buying one that it is an American one, the non-American ones aren't as good (speaking trumpets here).

Cheers,
Roger

If you are talking about horns actually marked as Besson

And, if by "built" you mean "fabricated", then Kanstul was it.

However, if by "built" you mean "assembled", then during the days of the Smoot-Hawley tariff act (Great Depression) and early German occupation of France, I believe Fontaine-Besson shipped a fairly small number of parts over to the US to be assembled locally, bypassing the tariffs, etc.. I am not sure who did that assembly work. Josh Landress may know.

Thanks for the replies. My 1st (and only for decades) horn is a Besson 2-20 trumpet that I bought in a pawnshop. I didn't play for years but a little over a year ago I started up again. Decided to buy a cornet. This is where my question is directed. The horn is in very good condition (like new) and is engraved Besson USA. There is no model number. It plays very well. I am "guessing" it was built pretty close to the end of Kanstul.

Found this quote on the History of Elden Benge page -

https://everythingtrumpet.com/gearhead/Benge.html

"For around 15 years, from the early 80s until the late 90s, Kanstul manufactured the F. Besson line for Boosey & Hawkes"

FWIW

Cheers,
Roger
