Somewhere Over The Rainbow

https://youtu.be/XPbD06oUD4I

2 years ago, most - if not all - of us were not performing onstage. What we originally thought would be a two week shutdown - by mid-April became apparent would be much longer.

Tim Saeger approached me with the idea of recording this duet. At the time, I was just starting to record etudes in my parking garage and was not sure if I had the right equipment to sound even halfway decent, let alone be convinced the mix would be appropriate with me in a boomy garage and Tim in his studio.

Tim assured me he had everything under control. And thus began not only a highly productive working/recording relationship - but also a friendship.

Here is what I wrote two years ago when we released this:

One of the things I love most about playing in the San Diego Symphony with the San Diego Symphony Musicians is that I get to play not only the great symphonic repertoire, but also the Pops concerts and movie soundtracks we perform throughout the season. Something a lot of people may not know about me is that prior to joining Orchestre symphonique de Montréal - OSM, most of my experiences on the trumpet revolved around band ("The President's Own" United States Marine Band), brass quintet (Valor Brass), orchestral pops, recording studio and big band playing. I tell students all the time - VERSATILITY is where its at!

Nonetheless, one thing any thoughtful and experienced leader will tell you is that they can’t do it all ALL of the time. Or, in our case as trumpet players - to quote Tony Kadleck who recently quoted the great Buddy Childers - “I used to think that my job was to play all of the lead… but now I realize that my job is to make sure that all of the lead gets played”.

We are fortunate here in San Diego to have Tim Saeger as one of our trusted extras to come in and make sure that the lead book (or any other book) gets properly covered. When Tim approached me with this duet project I jumped at the chance to play something other than my normal fare of etudes and excerpts. He kindly offered me to play the “high notes” to which I, like any other lead player, said “Nah, dude - you do your thing”!

Well - he definitely did his thing! AND because we’re socially distanced at the moment, he took on the added challenge of expertly mixing 2 completely different acoustics into one great track! BRAVO, Tim!

Real quick - True story - I purchased the flugelhorn I’m playing about a year and a half ago. It was used, but it was so inexpensive I bought it sight unseen. When I got it out of the box, I pushed the valves to make sure they worked and played maybe 3 notes on it. It has sat in its case ever since… until I pulled it out to record this project. I sat down and suddenly realized there were no 1st or 3rd slide saddles to control the pitch … and I didn’t have a flugelhorn mouthpiece. I was stuck using whatever unmarked mouthpiece was in the case on a flugelhorn that I couldn’t control the pitch if needed. What you’ll hear is my 2nd take. THANK YOU Yamaha Music USA for making instruments that play in tune! LOL

Well, I hope you enjoy Tim’s arrangement of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

- Chris

Very nice arrangement - and superb playing.

It's additionally nice to hear the story of how this came about; both your acquisition of the flugel, and your relationship with Tim (who certainly does a great job playing, too).

For the etudes that you've so courteously posted here and this - thanks, Chris. Great stuff!

Wonderful story, terrific arrangement and beautiful playing. I confess it's had for me to hear this song without a few tears! Chris, your "reverb chamber" works well -- Capitol Records Studios has nothing on you! Thank you so much for sharing this.

WOW ! Chris, you and Tim are so great together. Dead on timing, a thing I have trouble with on duets, but you guys make it look so easy. It's like you have been playing together for years. Bravo ! Bravo !
