I'm selling a gold-plated Bach Megatone 3C on Ebay. It's used and in great condition. I listed it with a buy it now price of $130 in case someone just wanted to snag it at that price. I figured you can buy brand new gold plated megatone bachs for around $190, so $130 for a used one in good condition might seem like a fair price.

So people started bidding on the auction and now it's one day from ending the price is up to $202! I'm really surprised and shocked. Why are there multiple people out there willing to pay over $200 for a used one when you can get a new one for less? The mouthpiece has a frosted/bead-blasted type finish except that the rim and cup are polished. Is it because that's a rare finish or something? Anyone know what's going on?

Not everybody knows - or researches - the "new" price.

Why are you concerned? Sounds like you will have a nice result.

Not concerned, just super curious.

I don't think he's "concerned" as much as just perplexed. But overbidding from buyers is a nice "problem" to have.

I don't know the answer to that question but "feeding frenzy" and a bit of competitive frothing of the mouth come to mind.

Something like this happened when I sold my ca 1990 Yamaha 231S flugelhorn. While it did not fetch more than new, the price went far higher than I expected for a then ca. 25 yo flugelhorn. And just a few weeks later, the much newer 2310 flugels someone else sowas selling went for ca. 200 Euro. Go figure.

I'm bummed bc I had my eye on it. I was also surprised at the jump in price.
I should have just paid the $130 for it.

As it happens, I had to remove a bidder who was new to ebay and had no idea what they were doing and contacted me to cancel their bid, so the price is back down to $86 at this point. 24 hours to go.
