Hi
Anyone familiar with this book ?
I have a gig in a couple of months for a Dixie/NO type of music, and though we got some arrangements, I want to dive further in this music.
Thanks

Hi JiCe
I picked up the Thornton book myself a few months ago. I haven't read it all, but the music theory and jazz explanations are solid. Its an overview for the style including lots of history, anecdotes and stories. I think its worth the money.
I would recommend picking up an Aebersold cd/book set like "down by the riverside" to play along with to get used to the style.
Best,

What percent is music-oriented and what, sociological?
I'm not saying I'm an expert, but I'm well read on New Orleans Jazz and used to live on the Gulf Coat, with gigs and other trips into N.O. often. Thanks. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Hi,
The book is mostly sociological writings and examples. The back of the book has some charts, but there are no lead parts written out. The section on theory you are probably familiar with, as it covers basic harmonics/pentatonics and jazz soloing over chord changes. There are a lot of performance "tips" and explanations of band leaders responsibilities/contract examples. I think it is geared towards the high school/college student looking to start soloing and gigging.
Its a good introduction to Dixieland with a nice history and explanation of the music, city, and culture, but light on music. There is a section on making a voodoo doll for example. It does have music you can download, but I didn't do that. Thats why I recommended the Aebersold disc as a supplement. Or just good ol' Youtube.
Not much for an experienced jazz gigger to pick up besides history and anecdotes.
For some good solo centric music to practice I use Coker-Patterns for Jazz and Ricker-Pentatonic Scales for Jazz Improvization. Keeps me busy.

Just finished reading it. (My son gave it to me for my birthday.) Nice solid book but not a method book. It is a long-term approach. You would need something different for getting up to speed quickly. (It is not a bunch of exercises, etc. It is meant to be read and then acted on.) _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S
