I respect the sentiment, but I find it a bit cynical.

If someone has a goal to play professionally in the section of a major symphony and he achieves that, he certainly did not set his goal too low.

Did he really say that? From what I’ve read about him he didn’t strike me as the drill-sergeant type. When did he say this and in what context?

I think Stuartissimo and Tpt_Guy are possibly reading this differently than I suspect it was meant.

What BA means, I expect, is that you should always be striving for more as an artist.

Whatever your goal, technically or musically, if you acheive it, you can/should always strive for another level.

He's not really talking about career etc here. It's about artistry. An artist is always trying for their best, and their best today is going to be different tomorrow and in 5 years and in 10 years.

I studied with him for 30 years and never heard him say this.

It's just a statement that your journey never ends.

Mr. Adam chose his words carefully.

Sure, and I figured that was the case. This is why context is important. If all I have is that quoted statement, which does not qualify the word goal in any meaningful way, then all I have is a statement that does seem a bit cynical.

The "On Trumpet" section shares some of William Adam's fundamental beliefs, and other interesting items I've discovered over time, such as ear training, specific trumpet concepts and practice routines. I'll continue to add to this section as time goes by.

One of my favorite quotes from William Adam:

"If you ever achieve your goal on trumpet; one thing has happened, your goal was set too low."

Robert Slack received a MM in Trumpet Performance from the Indiana University School of Music, since then, he has grown to be a respected professional in the music industry. While at Indiana, Mr. Slack studied with renowned trumpet teacher, William Adam. He received tremendous insight as a graduate teaching assistant in William Adam’s trumpet studio.

While I respect Slack and we were classmates at IU, much of what is on his website attributed to Mr. Adam or claimed to be Bob's original thoughts are actually borrowed from others. At least one thing was orignally written by me and posted in this forum here several years before Bob borrowed it without attribution. Like Billy, I would be skeptical that this was something Adam actually said. It certainly doesn't sound like him to my ears.
