After a mouthpiece safari I was unable to improve upon a custom mouthpiece Scott Lasky made for me 30 years ago.
So I want to make a copy.
Read around here that Greg Black (in NC) is good for that. Is that still true?
He is within driving distance of me (I want to hand carry my 'priceless' mouthpiece to him). |

You won't find more accurate scanning and mouthpiece reproduction and building than Vennture. In NC!
https://www.vennture.mp/product/mouthpiece-scan/
Vennture's scanning tech is extremely advanced, and ties into VennCAD... it's the next step in mouthpiece scanning/duplication, comparison, prototype and design. I have had pieces scanned, duplicated, and designed my own based on the above. Total freedom. If you have a special piece such as yours, it is a no brainer! They can scan rims, cups and backbores to an astonishing degree of accuracy - and you can play with the file in VennCAD, comparing or changing any parameter you want.
Send Doug a message, tell him Irish Mike sent ya! info@vennture.mp
Cheers!

I'll put another vote in for vennture. Extremly accurate scanning and topnotch production. I have one custom piece and one stock piece from them, both are excellent. I will be ordering more in the near future. _________________ Huber Music

I had good work done by Doug at Vennture, but recently he has gotten bad about responding to my emails. I hope you have better luck than I am having. _________________ Thane Standard Large Bb / Monette Unity B6-7M mpc

I have had Matt Frost at Frost Custom Brass do a few copies for me over the years. They have all been excellent. It's another great option, IMO.
Best of luck! _________________ Dave

Yes, thanks. I would definitely check with him. And throw in Reeves mpcs. into the mix, as well. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Jim New scanned a mouthpiece for me recently. He charges a bit more ($60, I think), but he is very responsive and will send you a copy of the digital scan file, as well as send it to the mouthpiece maker of your choice (assuming they have a CNC machine and are willing to work with an externally sourced file; my scan went to Mark Curry).
Another choice (although not close enough to you for a "hand delivery") is Karl Hammond. He does excellent quality custom work (by hand). He used to work at Schilke making their mouthpieces (as did Scott Laskey, I believe, so he might have some inside familiarity with Laskey's design approach). _________________ "He that plays the King shall be welcome . . . I saw recently a duplicate mpc job from Reeves shop for the bone player of Pink Martini and Athens big band member and it was STUNNING but the price is far away from the prices are mentioned.

I've heard Doug (Vennture) makes some Greg Black stuff for him?? Guess his scanning/duplicating would be good then, no? |

The prices mentioned are only for the scanning, not an actual mouthpiece. A full custom piece from any of these will be much more.
In 2018 a Reeves custom piece was $450 which is indeed on the high side compared to the prices I'm seeing from the other makes I know of.
Picket boasts prices starting at $175
Curry list prices starting at $150
Greg Black looks like $350
Frost says $315
I can't get to the Venncad site but I thought it was somewhere over $200 (edit: $225 per another user) _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Hey! Another vote for Vennture (though I have the utmost respect for all companies mentioned!). Doug and Cookie have been fabulous and have helped me create quite a few pieces for myself now. Vennture is also the only company I've worked with that can NAIL a backbore copy due to their ability to cut backbores with a single point cutting tool instead of a combination of reamers to approximate the backbore shape.
Though you're only asking about duplicating, which I feel Vennture does the most accurately out of any company I've tried, be aware that getting your piece scanned into VennCAD will allow to also compare your piece to lots of others in the catalog and take the parts of your current piece you like and combine them with features of others you liked to create something suited to you. The comparison and alteration features in VennCAD continue to impress me, and seriously the possibilities are pretty endless. Think... lead trumpet, other key instruments (C, Eb/D, Picc, etc), flugelhorn, cornet, rotary trumpet... bass trumpet if you're a heathen....
And yes, the price of a custom piece from them is around $225 these days. _________________ 2nd Trumpet, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra

Cookie (David Koch) and Doug have been amazing to deal with! Vennture is a busy boutique company, and while I haven't experienced it, I am sure that they might experience periods of unusually high volumes of order leading to a slower response time.
They make (imo) the best mouthpieces on the market. I would really encourage a little patience - or just pick up the phone or send a reminder email.
I can assure you that they want nothing more than satisfied customers - playing their favourite mouthpieces ever - and imo that is precisely what they deliver.
Best wishes,

Cookie here, I work for Vennture. Scott, please do reach out to me at cookie(at)Vennture.mp I’ll get you sorted.
Obviously I’m biased, but nobody out there is able to do scans like we do. Period. In the blink of an eye we gather about 40,000 data points for a trumpet cup and Doug‘s algorithms make those into incredibly accurate visuals within our software VennCAD.
I’ve had copies made by other manufacturers and now that I do most of our scanning work, I scanned them in to see radically different rims and cups from what was copied.
BUT that’s only part of the story. Cost is another factor. At the moment a copy from us is $225 ($205 for the piece and a reduced $20 for the scan since we know you’re buying a piece with it.) I don’t know of anybody that can copy a piece for that price, let alone do it the way we do it.
If you want to do custom work the only difference is that we generate a different .mpc file in VennCAD. The whole manufacturing process is the same for every piece because we do CNC single point turning. You want to make a tiny tweak? Easy! Want to go radically different? Just as easy.
Feel free to drop me a line at the email above.
